As much as I enjoy quiet time on the boat, reading a book or surfing the internet, entertaining is equally as enjoyable. Whether it’s family or friends, it’s always nice to have company. Here are my top 5 boat entertaining tips.
Check the weather
Our activities as boaters are heavily dependent on the weather. When I organize a boating event, I am always conscientious of what the weather forecast is. Wind direction, speed and so on… Although I personally enjoy being out on the water when it’s a bit wavy, I have found that entertaining on the boat is a whole other problem. Most non boaters usually get sea sick in record time. If you don’t have a sheltered area to anchor close to your marina, I highly suggest you stay on dock. Although It’s disappointing, it’s most definately the better option.
Do a briefing
Tell people what you expect of them. I usually tell them to stay away from the side of the boat while underway. I remind them to wear their life vests if that make them feel comfortable (kids must wear their life vests at all times on my boat). I tell them about the washroom and how to flush the toilet and those kind of things. Boats are big, active machines. The lakes in Southern Ontario are not the warmest, and you as the captain have to take responsibility for everyones safety. Tell them what you accept of them.
Stay well below the capacity of your boat and try not to overcrowd. Its usually a lot nicer of a day when you can actually walk around and not be bumping into people in an over crowded boat. The boat also tends to perform a lot better when not overcrowded. You know your boat, so try to limit your passenger to a comfortable number.
Sandwiches over BBQ
Best entertaining tip I have for you is to have pre-made sandwiches and food at the ready instead of trying to BBQ. I have found it difficult to BBQ on the boat especially if the waves kick up a bit. Most boat BBQ’s are usually small as well so depending on how many guests you have it could be difficult to keep up. I usually have prepared sandwiches and have found this to be a very good option for lunch. Make sure not to offer any greasy, crumbly or staining foods. This is especially important with kids around. Clean up is so much easier when the ketchup chips and cheese puffs are kept at home. I alway try and keep the snacks and foods basic and easy to clean.
Alcohol and such
Canned beverages vs glass. I keep a lot of water on hand. There are cool products you can buy like Docktail Boat Bar & Ultimate Marine Cup & Bottle Holder. This accessory can
Be respectful to other boaters
While on dock, keep the music down, don’t take over the dock and don’t let your friends lean on other peoples boats. This may sound like a common sense thing, but believe me people do it all the time. I have often had to tell my friend not to lean on other peoples boats. Its awkward, but respectful to other boaters on your dock.
